Paul (Saul of Tarsus)
(fl. 1st cent)
   Early Christian evangelist. He was born in Tarsus in Asia Minor, and was a Roman citizen. He studied under Gamaliel the Elder. As a result of a vison he was converted to Christianity, changed his name from Saul to Paul, and travelled throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East as an 'aspotle to the gentiles'. His epistles form a central part of the New Testament.
